Eight counties from Lodi to Arvin
The 26 offices in this guide span San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, and Kern counties—about 240 straight-line miles from Lodi in the north to Arvin in the south. Start with the subregion where your trip begins and compare offices within it. If you are watching for an earlier behind-the-wheel test appointment date, add an office from another subregion only if you could safely arrive with the required vehicle, paperwork, and accompanying driver. DriveTestWatch subregions are for navigation only—they are not official California DMV regions.

Northern valley: San Joaquin County
Lodi, Stockton, Manteca, and Tracy sit at the northern end of the valley in San Joaquin County. Stockton is central to the group—about 12 straight-line miles from Lodi, 11 from Manteca, and 16 from Tracy. This grouping does not mean every office is convenient from every starting point.

Stanislaus and Merced counties
Modesto and Turlock are about 11 straight-line miles apart in Stanislaus County, and Merced is about 24 straight-line miles south of Turlock. Los Banos sits on the west side of the valley, about 26 straight-line miles from Merced, so check the route before treating it as interchangeable with the Highway 99 offices.

Fresno area
Fresno, Fresno North, and Clovis form a tight cluster, each within about 9 straight-line miles of the others. Madera is about 18 straight-line miles northwest of Fresno North, and Reedley is about 20 straight-line miles southeast of Clovis. Reedley is also about 20 straight-line miles from Visalia, so it can be reasonable to compare it against the Tulare County group.

Hanford is about 19 straight-line miles from Tulare and about 21 from Visalia, so it is often compared with the Tulare County group. Coalinga, on the west side of the valley, is about 41 straight-line miles from Hanford and about 52 from Fresno—treat it as its own destination, not a routine alternative.

Visalia and Tulare are about 9 straight-line miles apart, with Porterville about 21 straight-line miles southeast of Tulare. Hanford and Reedley are each within about 22 straight-line miles of Visalia, so offices from adjacent counties can be reasonable comparisons. Compare the actual drive from where your trip begins.

Bakersfield and Bakersfield Sw are about 6 straight-line miles apart, with Shafter and Arvin each about 16 straight-line miles from Bakersfield and Taft about 24 straight-line miles from Bakersfield Sw. Delano is the northernmost Kern County office in this group, about 18 straight-line miles from Shafter and about 24 from Porterville.

Lake Isabella sits in the Kern River Valley about 35 straight-line miles northeast of Bakersfield, and Ridgecrest is in the desert about 45 straight-line miles beyond Lake Isabella. Straight-line miles understate mountain and desert routes, so check the actual drive before adding either office.

DriveTestWatch does not evaluate your route or decide whether an office is practical for you. Use this guide as a starting point, then verify each choice.

Consider your starting location, test vehicle, required accompanying driver, and the time you need to reach the office.

Compare a small cluster
Lodi–Stockton–Manteca–Tracy, Fresno–Fresno North–Clovis, and Bakersfield–Bakersfield Sw–Shafter are useful geographic comparison sets—not availability predictions.

Add remote offices deliberately
Coalinga, Lake Isabella, and Ridgecrest are each more than 30 straight-line miles from their nearest monitored neighbor. Check the real route before adding any of them.

Office services, closures, and appointment availability can change. Confirm everything through the California DMV.
What this comparison does not show
This guide does not rank offices by appointment demand, availability, pass rate, route difficulty, or likelihood of producing an earlier appointment. DriveTestWatch does not have enough consistent regional observation data to support those comparisons.
Why there is no availability chart yet
Regional comparisons require the approved minimum of 30 consecutive days with adequate scan coverage across the included offices. At this guide’s August 5 update, the data did not meet that minimum. Some individual office pages publish preliminary observations that meet a shorter threshold; this guide will not compare offices until the full standard is met.
Future regional analysis will disclose the observation period, included offices and dates, successful versus expected checks, missing periods, deduplication, and that results are DriveTestWatch observations—not official DMV statistics. Read the full methodology.
How monitoring works
DriveTestWatch can monitor public behind-the-wheel appointment times at offices a customer selects. Active scans are scheduled every 10 minutes. When a scheduled check finds a new opening that matches the customer’s date and time settings, DriveTestWatch attempts to send an email and, if selected, an SMS alert. Checks and message delivery can be delayed or fail.
The service is alert-only and read-only. We alert, you book on the official DMV site. It does not request DMV credentials or book, hold, cancel, or reschedule appointments. Availability can change between a scan, alert delivery, and an attempt to book through the official DMV website.
