Nine metro-area offices, thirteen across the valley and the Sierra
Nine of the 22 offices sit in and around the Sacramento metro area, across Sacramento, Placer, and Yolo counties. Five more run north along the Sacramento Valley toward Chico, and eight sit in the Sierra foothills and mountain towns, from Quincy in the north to Mariposa in the south—Mariposa is about 108 straight-line miles from the Sacramento office. Start with the subarea where your trip begins and compare offices within it. If you are watching for an earlier behind-the-wheel test appointment date, add an office from another subarea only if you could safely arrive with the required vehicle, paperwork, and accompanying driver. Sacramento metro core
Sacramento and Sacramento South are about 5 straight-line miles apart inside the city, and Carmichael is about 8 straight-line miles from Sacramento in the northeastern suburbs. Folsom sits farther east—about 10 straight-line miles from Carmichael and about 18 from Sacramento. This grouping does not mean every office is convenient from every neighborhood.

Placer County
Roseville and Rocklin are about 4 straight-line miles apart just northeast of the Sacramento County line, and each is about 9 to 10 straight-line miles from Folsom. Auburn, about 11 straight-line miles beyond Rocklin where the valley meets the foothills, is about 32 from the Sacramento office—check the route before treating the three as interchangeable.

Yolo County
Davis and Woodland are about 8 straight-line miles apart west of the Sacramento River. Davis is about 15 straight-line miles from the Sacramento office and Woodland about 19, so both are reasonable to compare with the metro core. Compare the actual drive from where your trip begins.

Northern Sacramento Valley
Five offices stretch north along the valley floor. Yuba City is about 20 straight-line miles from Colusa, Chico and Oroville are about 23 apart, and Willows is about 25 from both Chico and Colusa. Even the southernmost office, Yuba City, is about 31 straight-line miles from Roseville, so treat the valley offices as their own comparison set.

Gold Country foothills
Grass Valley, Placerville, and Jackson sit in the Sierra foothills east of the metro area, but not as one cluster: Placerville is about 18 straight-line miles from Auburn and about 19 from Folsom, Grass Valley is about 23 from Auburn, and Jackson is about 27 from Placerville. Grass Valley and Jackson are about 63 straight-line miles apart, so compare each against your actual route.

Sierra and mountain towns
These five mountain-area offices are far from the metro core and from one another. Truckee and South Lake Tahoe are about 29 straight-line miles apart near Lake Tahoe, Quincy is about 46 from Oroville in the northern Sierra, and Sonora and Mariposa are about 40 apart in the southern foothills. In the mountains, straight-line miles can differ greatly from road miles—treat each office as its own destination, not a routine alternative.

They are not driving distances, traffic estimates, or expected travel times, and in the mountains straight-line miles can differ greatly from road miles. “Nearest” considers the monitored offices in this guide, with two exceptions: Quincy is nearest to Susanville (Far North region) and Mariposa is nearest to Merced (San Joaquin Valley region), so those rows list the neighboring-region office as well. An office in another region may be closer to some starting points.

How to choose offices for a scan
DriveTestWatch does not evaluate your route or decide whether an office is practical for you. Use this guide as a starting point, then verify each choice.

Consider your starting location, test vehicle, required accompanying driver, and the time you need to reach the office.

Compare a small cluster
Sacramento–Sacramento South–Carmichael, Roseville–Rocklin–Folsom, and Davis–Woodland are useful geographic comparison sets—not availability predictions.

Add mountain offices deliberately
Truckee, South Lake Tahoe, Quincy, Sonora, and Mariposa are each far from the metro core and from one another. For Quincy and Mariposa, a monitored office in a neighboring region (Susanville, Merced) is closer than any office in this guide. Check the real route before adding any of them.

What this comparison does not show
This guide does not rank offices by appointment demand, availability, pass rate, route difficulty, or likelihood of producing an earlier appointment. DriveTestWatch does not have enough consistent regional observation data to support those comparisons.
Why there is no availability chart yet
Regional comparisons require the approved minimum of 30 consecutive days with adequate scan coverage across the included offices. At this guide’s August 5 update, the data did not meet that minimum. Some individual office pages publish preliminary observations that meet a shorter threshold; this guide will not compare offices until the full standard is met.
Future regional analysis will disclose the observation period, included offices and dates, successful versus expected checks, missing periods, deduplication, and that results are DriveTestWatch observations—not official DMV statistics. Read the full methodology.
How monitoring works
DriveTestWatch can monitor public behind-the-wheel appointment times at offices a customer selects. Active scans are scheduled every 10 minutes. When a scheduled check finds a new opening that matches the customer’s date and time settings, DriveTestWatch attempts to send an email and, if selected, an SMS alert. Checks and message delivery can be delayed or fail.
The service is alert-only and read-only. We alert, you book on the official DMV site. It does not request DMV credentials or book, hold, cancel, or reschedule appointments. Availability can change between a scan, alert delivery, and an attempt to book through the official DMV website.
